Celebrating National Avocado Day

How best would the Hass Avocado Board celebrate National Avocado Day – with an avocado grove tour of course!! Wednesday July 31st was National Avocado Day, and the HAB marked the day appropriately with a grove tour.

In conjunction with a Commodity Roundtable meeting in nearby Dana Point CA, HAB invited all of the people from the affiliated Agricultural Promotion Groups (APG’s), and the teams that work with the Marketing Orders and Research and Promotion organizations to join us for a visit into the world of growing avocados.

Bob Lucy and Bob Siemer did the honors and hosted the group in the grove and gave the visitors insights and understanding into the fine art of growing avocados. Their knowledge and expertise were evident as they shared their passion for growing our favorite fruit – hass avocados – we couldn’t have had better hosts than Bob and Bob – thanks guys!

Thanks to the reps from the National Mango Board, US Highbush Blueberry Council, the Almond Board of California, National Watermelon Promotion Board, the National Peanut Board, The American Egg Board, United Sorghum Checkoff Program, United Soybean Board, the Cotton Board, Maine Lobster Board, and the Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association for joining us for our tour and making this a fun and educational National Avocado Day.

The bus was filled with a buzz about all the group learned on the way back to Dana Point, and we know that we created a great team of Avocado Ambassadors for all of us to have on our team!!

About the Commodity Roundtable:

The Commodity Roundtable is an informal group of Chief Executive Officers, Executive Directors and Directors of various disciplines of agriculture promotion groups and federal marketing orders who share information to help their organizations achieve efficient and effective program implementation. This group comes together periodically to discuss and develop best practices in the areas of finance, administration, marketing and research. The Roundtable has no authority to act or speak on behalf of its members or take positions on issues. Annual fees for the Commodity Roundtable are scaled to the size of the APG’s annual budget. Any costs associated with the meetings are divided among the members who attend the event(s). This is a great resource for HAB where we get an opportunity to network with other groups that have USDA oversight and get to share notes on best practices and updates on success stories of other commodities.
