Connecting Culture and Nutrition: Celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month with Aguacates – Love One Today®
During Hispanic Heritage Month (HHM), the Hass Avocado Board (HAB) proudly celebrated the vibrant traditions and health of the Hispanic community through a mix of influencer partnerships, a dynamic social media content, and a refreshed digital presence on Aguacates – Love One Today® page.
We partnered with influential creators to share authentic recipes and nutrition insights that celebrate Hispanic culture and promote heart health benefits on avocado consumption. Each creator crafted engaging content featuring a research of their choice and fresh avocados as the centerpiece of delicious cultural dishes. Here’s a look at a few of the inspiring creators who made it happen.
Evelia Soto (@_lovelyeve_) showcased baked potato tacos with a creamy avocado salsa and emphasized the naturally good fats in avocados and American Heart Association’s recommendation to replace saturated fats with unsaturated fats for heart health, celebrating avocados as a heart healthy fruit that fits perfectly into Hispanic traditions.
Angelica Marisol (@melzmari) prepared sweet potato bites topped with black beans and guacamole tying in the message that eating healthy fats, like those found in avocados, supports heart health.
Both of these influencers also cited a systematic review and meta analysis that included 10 randomized controlled studies (RCTs) with a total of 2,345 participants which found that avocado intake is linked with a significant reduction in “bad” LDL cholesterol and systolic blood pressure.*
Another influencer, Leo Vargas (@huevonalife) shared that fresh avocados are a good source of fiber and reference a clinical trial where 45 participants (with overweight/obesity) ate an avocado a day as part of a moderate-fat diet had reduced total cholesterol and bad LDL cholesterol and improved the ratio of total cholesterol to good HDL-cholesterol levels, compared to participants who did not consumer avocado (low-fat or moderate-fat oils diets). Disclaimer: While the conclusions from a single study cannot be generalized to larger, more diverse populations, the study supports the growing body of evidence demonstrating avocados as a heart-healthy fruit.
HAB’s social media content around HHM spotlighted the pillars of Salud, Cultura, and Sabor, connecting with our Hispanic market audiences through content featuring delicious recipes like the Chicken Avocado Chilaquiles and Fresh Lime and Avocado Aguachiles while sharing cultural facts and nutrition insights.
*Disclaimer: the study showed no significant changes in other cardiovascular risk factors like total cholesterol, triglycerides, or blood glucose.
