Healthy Food, Healthy People, Healthy Planet
At the September 21st Hass Avocado Board’s meeting, the board heard a proposal for the initial strategic plan for the Avocado Sustainability Center.
The Center, which was approved one year ago, was the first step in our work towards developing a sustainability program that is as committed to science as much as our nutritional program is.
This strategic plan, which was the culmination of over eight months of work by many industry members, Avocado Sustainability Advisory members, board members and staff was truly a collaboration of the industry. It is an effort to realize our collective commitment to Sustainability and that it is a strategic imperative for this industry. This work will be done to assist in continuing the growth trajectory we have been on for 20 years.
It was unanimously approved by both the Hass Avocado Committee, and the Hass Avocado Board, showing it has global appeal and support. This new commitment gives us a path forward, to do the research, and to take a clear-eyed look at our industry, and evaluate how we can best live up to our HAB sustainability Guiding Value:
We believe and support the concept that fulfilling the needs of today’s society can be accomplished without compromising meeting those of future generations.
This commitment, which shows intention and action will be at the core of our values for the next decade. The industry has decided to tackle the challenge that today’s consumers desire, a firm commitment, and a show of purpose, that sustainability is as important to us, as it is to them and their families.
We have always believed we have a solid sustainability story to tell. That our industry, built on the history of mostly multi-generational family farms, shows our clear commitment to our ongoing land stewardship. Now we can find other ways, with science to back it, that we are fully committed to Healthy Food, Healthy People, and a Healthy Planet.

Fruit Logistica Trend Report 2020: A Guide to Sustainability in the Fresh Produce Business
Early this year, as we were preparing to put our own plan of action into place and talk about a strategic framework for sustainability in the avocado industry with our Board of Directors at the Hass Avocado Board, we came across this study that was published to coincide with Fruit Logistica in Berlin in February of 2020. The report written by Cindy van Rijswick of Rabobank, commissioned by Fruit Logistica, and edited and designed by Fruitnet Media International, was one of the most interesting and educational reports on sustainability in the agricultural industry we have seen.
The “HAB Effect” Delivers Value For Entire Avocado Industry
The Hass Avocado Board (HAB) recently debuted a new video which highlights the contributions the organization makes to the industry to support growing avocado consumption in the United States. With the goal of reaching industry members within the supply chain, the video serves as a powerful resource for fostering a deeper understanding of the work that HAB is doing for the avocado industry in the United States and making stakeholders even more knowledgeable about the work the board does.
