Seats at the Table: How the BOLD Governance in Action Project Is Equipping Future Leaders
Strong organizations do not happen by accident. They are shaped by clear purpose, disciplined oversight, thoughtful leadership, ethical conduct, and a commitment to serving stakeholders well. That is why the Hass Avocado Board’s BOLD Program introduced the BOLD Governance in Action Project, a new signature capstone experience designed to help emerging avocado industry leaders see governance in action.
Through this project, BOLD participants work in teams and are assigned to one participating avocado industry organization. Each team attends one approved board meeting, engages in respectful inquiry with the organization’s chief executive or designated contact, and presents what they learned at the BOLD graduation meeting. The project is grounded in BoardSource literature, using Board Fundamentals to introduce the role of the board and Ten Basic Responsibilities of Nonprofit Boards as the practical framework for observation.
Participants will explore governance areas such as mission and advocacy, planning, programs and services oversight, financial stewardship, board development, legal and ethical integrity, and public standing. They will be asked to observe how boards frame decisions, ask strategic questions, steward resources, support accountability, and strengthen trust with stakeholders and the broader industry.
The project is designed as a learning experience, not an evaluation. BOLD participants are not auditing or scoring participating organizations. Instead, they will reflect on what good governance looks like in practice and how governance contributes to organizational strength.
For emerging leaders, this experience matters. BOLD graduates will serve on boards, committees, commissions, associations, or advisory groups. Understanding governance will help them distinguish between oversight and management, ask better questions, recognize the responsibilities of board service, and appreciate the connection between strong governance and long-term industry impact.
The BOLD Governance in Action Project reflects HAB’s commitment to developing leaders who understand not only the avocado business, but also the leadership systems that help organizations serve the industry with integrity, accountability, and purpose.
